Brexit Research Presented to Local Residents and Businesses

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council held a free Brexit event on 4 October, with BrexitLawNI in the Sean Hollywood Arts Centre, Newry for all residents and businesses, to capture views on how Brexit has been impacting people living in the district.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairman, Councillor Mark Murnin said, “I welcome the BrexitLawNI team to Newry to present their research findings and be part of a discussion on this important issue. Brexit is one of the most significant issues that we have to deal with and it is vital that we look closely at how it has and will continue to affect all our citizens.”

Over the past 18 months, BrexitLawNI has been engaged in a research project, looking at the human rights, conflict transformation and constitutional implications of Brexit for Northern Ireland. The research team is comprised of academics from the law schools of Queen’s University Belfast, Ulster University, and staff from the Committee on the Administration of Justice.

During September 2018, BrexitLawNI published reports regarding the impact of Brexit in six key areas: the peace process, North-South relations, the border and free movement, racism and xenophobia, human rights and equality, and socio-economic rights.

Members of the BrexitLawNI discussed the key findings of their research at the event and facilitated questions and discussion with the audience.
