Biodiversity and Community Growing Projects Receive Funding
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council recently announced funding totalling £21,925 to support Biodiversity and Community Growing Projects in the District. Sixteen local groups will receive the money through the ‘Council’s Call 2 for Financial Assistance’.
Applications were open to community groups, the voluntary sector, and local schools under the themes of ‘Local Biodiversity Enhancement’ and ‘Community Growing’. The funding will help the successful groups to grow their own food and protect our biodiversity. Groups will be awarded between £500 and £1500 to help carry out their projects.
Successful projects to be funded under the ‘Local Biodiversity Enhancement’ theme range from creating new habitats for wildlife, to protecting our native red squirrel and educating local school children about pollination using a demonstration glass beehive!
Under the ‘Community Growing’ theme successful projects to be funded include growing fruit and vegetables for local families, building healthier lifestyles and creating community gardens across Newry, Mourne and Down.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Pete Byrne said, “The Council is delighted to fund these unique projects which aim to improve biodiversity and teach people about the importance of home-grown foods and healthy living. I look forward to seeing them completed and the improvements they will make for both the local community and the environment.”
