Be Active for Life

What is Be Active for Life?

Be Active for Life is an initiative created by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council to encourage people of all ages and abilities to get either get involved in physical activity or increase what they are currently doing.
 
If you want low, moderate or high-level intensity, there will be something to suit! 
 
The programme is currently delivering over 60 daytime classes, Monday to Friday across the district. 
 
The classes are effective, fun and with a strong social element with many participants are involved in lots of different classes to improve their health and wellbeing.  By offering affordable classes at £2.20 per session, the program ensures that cost is not a barrier to participation, allowing everyone the opportunity to stay active and healthy.
 
The programme promotes lifelong fitness and emphases that staying active is essential for maintaining a healthy, balanced lifestyle. 
 

What are the Be Active for Life Classes?

General Classes:

Chi Me: A gentle exercise class similar to Tai Chi, combining slow movements with deep breathing.
Water/Aqua Aerobics: Exercise in the water, which is easy on the joints and great for all fitness levels.
Strength and Balance: A low-intensity class focused on improving balance and building strength.
Teen Gym: For ages 13-15, this class introduces teens to the gym with guidance from a qualified instructor.
Parent and Baby: Parents can exercise while their babies play in a welcoming supportive environment.
Boccia: An inclusive sport similar to bowls, suitable for everyone.
50+ Gym: A gym session for those over 50, with support from a qualified instructor.
Low-Intensity Interval Training: Light exercises that are easy to follow, perfect for beginners.
Badminton: Get moving while playing badminton; the council provides racquets.
Circuits: A mix of exercises suitable for all abilities.
 

Down Leisure Centre Specific Classes:

Bootcamp: A challenging workout designed to boost fitness levels.
Lunch Time Circuits: A quick and effective workout during your lunch break.
Learn to Spin: An entry-level Spin class for those new to indoor cycling, building fitness to progress to more advanced classes.
Chair Aerobics: Low-intensity exercises done while seated, great for those with limited mobility.
Dance: Get moving and have fun with dance-based exercises.
Bat and Chat: A fun session combining table tennis and socialising.

Newry Leisure Centre Specific Classes:

Nordic Walking: Walking with poles to engage your upper body and improve fitness.
Beginner Running: A supportive class for those who want to start running but need a little help getting going.
Line Dancing: Put on your dancing shoes and enjoy learning line dances.
High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT): A more challenging circuit workout for those looking to push themselves.

Be Active for Life & Socials: Exercise classes combined with social activities for a fun and engaging experience.
Beginner Circuits: A gentle introduction to circuit training, perfect for those new to exercise.
Racket Sports: Enjoy playing various racket sports like table tennis and badminton.
Chi Me & Socials: Gentle Chi Me exercises followed by a social gathering.

How to Book:

1. Download the NMD Be Active app
2. Select your leisure centre of choice
3. Tap the Be Active for Life tile
4. Select your class & proceed to payment
Or drop into your local leisure centre to book direct.

Costs:

£2.20 per class
£32.70 for 20 sessions
£16.40 Direct Debit per month for unlimited classes
