All Go for Delamont Country Park Masterplan
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has announced the start of a project to produce a Masterplan to develop Delamont Country Park. The proposed Masterplan will provide an analysis of current facilities and services and will consider the long term sustainable development of the Park.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairman, Councillor Mark Murnin said, “Delamont is one of our district’s most important and well used parks and it is our intention to continue to improve its facilities and develop its resources. Our Masterplan will build on what is already available and it is critical that those who use the Park are able to tell us what they want to ensure the Park’s sustainable development into the future.
“In Delamont, we have a 200 acre park which is situated on the shores of Strangford Lough; this location allows for a wide range of land and water based activities and we are determined to build on this. We expect that the Masterplan will enable more people to enjoy its facilities as well as providing economic benefits for local businesses with an increase in tourism and visitor numbers.”
The Park currently provides a wide range of services including a children’s outdoor adventure playground, miniature railway, barbeque and picnic areas and Steamers Coffee Shop and café.
Visitors can take countryside and shorelines walks, which are open to both cyclists and horse riders, and take part in orienteering courses. The Park also gives access to a canoe trail, caravan and camping park and there are mobility scooters for hire as well as ample car parking and restroom facilities.
Events may be hosted in the Heron’s Nest and a range of exciting events and activities take place throughout the year, including the annual Skiffie Festival and the popular Magnus Barelegs Festival.
The Masterplan Project will be facilitated by Outdoor Recreation NI. In the coming months the Council will be providing consultation opportunities which will be promoted locally, enabling local groups, organisations and individuals to inform the recommendations of the Masterplan.
