Action Cancer Bus Comes to Slieve Croob
Slieve Croob District Electoral Area (DEA) Forum, in collaboration with County Down Rural Community Network (CDRCN), has organised the Action Cancer Bus to visit Slieve Croob. The bus will be in the area over the coming months to enable rural people to access vital health services at the heart of the community.
Councillor Roisin Howell, Chairperson of the Slieve Croob DEA Forum said, “It is vital to identify breast abnormalities and breast cancer as early as possible. If breast cancer is found early, there are more treatment options and a better chance of survival. We all know that it can be difficult to access transport in rural areas, so bringing this important service to the local area allows everyone to access important healthcare.
“I would encourage local people to book early to ensure they secure their place for breast screening or a MOT health check.”
In Northern Ireland approximately 1,300 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year, almost one third of these are picked up through breast screening. Early detection saves lives so it is important that these services are provided to the rural community.
The Action Cancer Bus provides digital breast screening for woman aged 40-49 and 70+ and MOT health checks for men and women aged 16 and over. Every year, the Big Bus delivers approximately 5,000 breast screenings and 4,000 MOT health checks within local communities. Health checks include blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol and body composition analysis.
